In the Old Testament
the people believed,
that natural disasters were
punishment from God!

The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart. And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.
-Genesis 6:5-7

Today, when Hurricanes,
Tsunamis, Earthquakes,
many well-meaning Christians,
still say that this is punishment from God!

What we know today,
that they didn’t know
during the time of Noah,
is that there are scientific
and meteorological explanations
for natural disasters.
And that they are not CAUSED by
the Gods being angry or
punishment for deviant behavior.

But we are not off the hook…

Many times when natural disasters occur
we look to the heavens and cast blame
because it is easier
than looking in the mirror
and taking responsibility.

We are responsible, that is right…
For CARING for the Earth…
And when we don’t
care properly for the Earth
the Earth can react

While I believe that natural disasters
are NOT punishment from God,
I do believe we all have a responsibility
to be good care takers
of the ONE Earth we will ever get.
